Photobiomodulation in your home
In recent years, high-power LED tools have moved out of the doctor's surgery and into the consumer market. Advances in miniaturization, long-life lithium batteries and medical-grade LEDs have brought prices down, while guaranteeing safe home use. Everyone can now enjoy calibrated red or infrared light to stimulate cells, smooth skin, soothe pain or accelerate muscle recovery, all in ten minutes from the comfort of your living room or bed.
How does a portable device work?
A portable photobiomodulation device is made up of a number of technological components and offers many advantages for the user.
LED panel or matrix
Emitting red (630 nm) or IR (850 nm) waves, its large surface area covers face, neck or whole limb.
Rechargeable battery
Supplies power to the LEDs for 30 to 60 minutes, allowing total freedom of movement.
Locked programming
Pre-set duration and fluence, no risk of overdosing and reproducible results.
Flexible diffuser
Adapts to the curves of the body, ensuring comfort, even contact and better light penetration.
The four main families of consumer devices
There are four main families of photobiomodulation devices to target and optimize use.
1.
LED face mask
Ergonomic shape, adjustable attachments: targets wrinkles, radiance, acne.
2.
Folding panel
Flat or tented over the stomach or legs, it is ideal for post-sport recovery.
3.
Back cushion or lumbar belt
Red and infrared LEDs integrated into a textile cover: relieves tension in the lower back.
4.
Hair helmet
655 nm dome to stimulate follicles and thicken hair.
Beauty and skin care indications
Portable PBM devices can also bring many benefits to your skin.
Global anti-aging
Increased collagen, reduced fine lines and improved skin firmness.
Inflammatory acne
Red and amber LEDs to soothe redness and eliminate bacteria.
Gentle hyperpigmentation
LED light to even out skin tone.
Comparison of prices, parameters and performance of different devices
Each device has specific properties:
60 LED Mask, 30 mW/cm², with
Entry-level device (€150 to €200), ideal for a light anti-aging test and for improving sleep quality through light exposure at the end of the day, modulating melatonin and promoting sleep.
300 LED, 40 mW/cm² panel
Mid-range device (€400-600), ideal for sports recovery, muscle stiffness and post-training aches and pains, thanks to 15-minute sessions to relax contracted fibers.
Dome 1,200 LEDs, 50 mW/cm², with
High-end device (€700-1,200), ideal for multi-zone treatments, acting on deep tissues.
Safety and best practices at home
These are just a few of the steps you need to take to use portable PBM devices safely.
Check device certification
Photobiomodulation should not be used: on active cancerous areas; on the abdomen of pregnant women, especially in the first trimester; if you have recently taken photosensitizing drugs (retinoids, antibiotics, anti-epileptics); or on undiagnosed skin lesions (infected wounds, ulcers).
Protect eyes if necessary
Although LEDs are less dangerous than lasers, prolonged exposure, especially with lamps close to the face, can cause eye strain. We recommend wearing the special filtering goggles supplied with the device.
Use in a suitable environment
Carry out the session in an airy room, at a moderate temperature (20-25°C). This avoids any risk of overheating the skin. Always place the device on a stable support or one that fits snugly against the face or body.
Respecting session times
Do not multiply sessions or arbitrarily increase duration. The standard protocol of 10 to 20 minutes per zone, 3 to 5 times a week, is sufficient to obtain cumulative effects without risking cellular saturation or irritation.
Ensure regular maintenance of the unit
After each use, clean the emitting surface with a cloth. Avoid abrasive products that could damage the diffusion lens or reduce light output. Store your LED lamp away from moisture and dust.
Follow your feelings and adjust if necessary
Keep a small follow-up diary: note your comfort during and after sessions, and any improvements observed in your skin, pain or sleep. If you feel any unusual discomfort (persistent redness, irritation), space out your sessions and ask your practitioner for advice.
Benefits and advantages of portable consumer devices
A few figures to illustrate the benefits of the various consumer handheld devices:
of wrinkle depth after 8 weeks of photobiomodulation on the face.
improvement in sleep score in red LED users 10 minutes before bedtime.
of lumbar pain reported after 4 weeks' use of wearable devices, 3 times a week.
